Pioneer Range, Salmon Challis National Forest, ID - Backpacking
Location: Pioneer Range, Salmon Challis National Forest, ID Type of trip: Backpacking Date: Aug. 9-11, 2019 People: Alone
The Pioneer Range is a gem of a mountain range just to the east of Sun Valley, ID. The Sun Valley locals seem to go here rather than the more renowned Sawtooth Range.
At a Friday work happy hour, one of my coworkers suggested I go to Angel Lake within the range. I left straight from the event to the trailhead, where I camped for the night.
In the morning, I climbed 3500 ft of elevation past Moose Lake and to the top of the ridge overlooking Angel Lake. I attempted to traverse the ridge to Angel’s Perch or one
of the closer summits. The route was sketchy and the wind was ripping, so I turned around pretty quickly. Back at the ridge I ran into a trail runner girl who I had previously
met at a Ketchum music in the park. It was an insane coincidence. She asked if I wanted to join her to summit Angel’s Perch but I regretfully declined.
I headed down the ridge to Angel’s Lake, a huge circular lake perched on the edge of the mountain. I hit the hay after cooking up some trout.
The trip finished with a cross country trek down into Fall Creek drainage. I chased some cattle down the trail, a common occurrence in this part of Idaho.
